The phrase “friendly cat” might seem like an oxymoron, but surprisingly, not all cats are aloof and wary of strangers. If dogs just aren’t for you, then check out the cat breeds below. These felines are known to be sweet, affectionate and sociable.
The Scottish Fold got its name from its folded ears and bobtail. With their eternal kitten looks, round face, and big eyes, these cats will steal your heart from the minute you meet. Looking for a cat that you can travel with? Scottish Folds are well adjusted and easily adapt to new environments. They’re also good with strangers and love playing. And like a dog, Scottish Folds are trainable and responsive.
Maine Coons are known to be big and fluffy. They’re also intelligent and friendly. Though their size may surprise many people and they may appear to be a mix between a cat and a raccoon, these gentle giants are 100% cat. The combination is a bit terrifying, but, not to worry, it’s scientifically impossible. These big cats get along with other animals and strangers, so they are great if you live in a busy household with children and their friends coming in and out or with other pets.
Persians are the ultimate lap cat. Cartoons of them lounging on velvet chairs and dripping in diamonds aren’t too far from the truth. Sitting on your lap while you work, eat, and play video games is a Persian cat’s dream job. Since they are quiet and low energy, you don’t have to worry about them climbing up your drapes and getting into trouble while you’re away. That said, these cats aren’t very tolerant of small children and are more suited for a quiet adults-only home.
The Exotic Shorthair looks a lot like a Persian, except with short hair instead of a long, flowing coat. The smushed face and big eyes give these cats an almost human face, complete with facial expressions such as scowling and sarcasm. But when it comes to personality, Exotic Shorthairs are sweet and affectionate. They’ll greet you at the door and are perfectly happy to spend the weekend on your stomach while you read or watch movies in bed.
This hairless cat was referred to as a “hand” in the TV series Friends where it freaked out almost everyone. But despite its somewhat creepy appearance, Sphinx cats are friendly and sociable. They’re intelligent and playful, so lots of toys and catnip are recommended for Sphinx owners. And because they are hairless, they love to cuddle under soft blankets. Some people even make cat-outfits out of fleece for their Sphinxes during the cold winter months. These cats are a great choice for people who have allergies and can’t own cats with hair.
