This Sunday, starting about 12:20PM PT, we will take as much time as it takes to explain this grave threat to the Monterey County Animal shelter. We will have representatives from Peace of Mind Dog Rescue and the SPCA for Monterey County on the program to answer questions and tell us how to fight for animals’ lives and caregivers’ jobs.
We either beat this back or many, many animals will die needlessly.
Important: We stand with the dedicated shelter staff on this. It’s not their fault this is happening and they need our support to keep their jobs supporting our community’s animals. Please listen and tell your friends!
From Peace of Mind Dog Rescue:
The Monterey County budget is out for 2018-19. The proposed budget for Monterey County Animal Services will cut the shelter’s budget in half!
The shelter currently has 15 1/2 employees (5 are part-time). The new budget would cut 8 positions.
Previous budget cuts have already made it difficult for the current shelter staff to meet the needs of the community and the animals. Additional cuts will further cripple their efforts to help animals in need in Monterey County and will leave the shelter close to inoperable.
The cuts would leave the shelter with no front office staff – no one to answer phones, return emails, no adoption program, no licensing, no staff available to help with reclaimed pets. In order to clean kennels and care for animals, the remaining animal control officers would be called out of the field – leaving stray, injured, and aggressive animals running at large.
What can you do to help? Contact the Supervisor from your district and stress your opposition to these cuts to Monterey County Animal Services. Emailing, calling and sending postal letters are all helpful.

Please pass this along to any of your contacts who can help. We have until June 4th. On June 5th the budget will be discussed at the Monterey County Board of Supervisors meeting, and budget comments are open to the public at that time. The more voices that are heard in opposition to these drastic cuts, the better chance of keeping more of the shelter’s budget intact.
You can read the entire proposed budget on the Monterey County Government website. Animal Services is on page 495.
Thank you in advance for your support. The shelter staff needs it. The animals in Monterey County need it.
