Review Summary

SnuggleSafe is an almost essential tool for anyone rescuing or especially transporting orphan newborn animals. Many cannot regulate their own body temp so rescuers must provide warmth for them. Try to purchase two so you can provide constant warmth if needed.

Well-made in the UK

Has saved many lives

Cons

Seems expensive until you need it

10-hour warmth seems a stretch. We replace with a freshly heated SnuggleSafe every five hours. If you need one, you actually want two or even three for longer transports or use overnight at home.

Chilled kittens are dead kittens. This can save them.

RECOMMENDED — The SnuggleSafe Microwave Heating Pad is a simple $25 device that can solve a sometimes complex problem: How to keep a litter of newborn kittens/puppies/other small animals warm and happy, especially during transport. It can be a lifesaver.

The product is an approximately 8-inch round plastic disk filled with a substance that aborbs heat when microwaved and then stays warm for as long as 10 hours.

If you buy one, please spring for two so you can cycle them for continous warmth. You are not supposed to re-microwave a used SnuggleSafe until it is no longer warm.

Here are two endorsements from my experience:

  • I consider SnuggleSafe to be so essential that I always carry at least one in our car as part of a kitten rescue “go kit.”
  • They get “loaned” to rescue friends and are often never returned to us.

SnuggleSafe minus its fabric pawprint cover

But the most important endorsement comes from the lives of orphan kittens we have kept warm using a SnuggleSafe. Becoming chilled can easily kill neonatal kittens — sometimes even if they are rewarmed.

While there are other ways to warm them — we also carry a Sunbeam heating pad and appropriately-sized DC-AC inverter to plug it into — SnuggleSafe is easy to use and every convenience store has a microwave oven you can use 24/7.

Be sure to always keep a layer of fabric between the plastic disk and the animal to prevent burns. SunggleSafe comes with a pawprint cover for this purpose but a towel also works.

If you tranport rescue animals — of whatever species — or want to be ready to save lives when called upon, I consider the SnuggleSafe Microwave Heating Pad to be an almost essential piece of equipment for your rescue kit.

Just about anyone who cares for animals large or small can benefit from the ease and safety of SnuggleSafes comforting warmth.

Our SnuggleSafe heatpad can be used time and time again. Do not over-heat and only re-heat our heatpad once it has completely cooled to room temperature.

Only heat one pad in a microwave at a time. As with any heat source, we do not recommend the use of the heatpad with anesthetized or unconscious animals. Recovering animals which use the heatpad should be monitored to ensure that they can move from the heat if necessary.
