Paw’d Cast: Dr. Burtch on Cancer and Our Pets

Paw'd Cast: Dr. Burtch on Cancer and Our Pets 1

Dr. Merrianne Burtch, Pacific Veterinary Specialists & BirchBark Foundation

Like in people, cancer is a disease that generally only kills pets that live long enough to catch the disease. So, as we have extended animals’ lives through better nutrition and veterinary care, more live long enough to eventually succumb to cancer. Again, as in people, exciting developments are helping us treat cancer in companion animals more effectively and catch it earlier. Studies and drugs that help people often extend pets’ lives as well — and vice versa.

This is a wide-ranging interview with veterinary internist Dr. Merrianne Burtch of Pacific Veterinary Specialists in Capitola (across from the mall, also an emergency clinic) discussing cancer in companion animals.
