The old saying may be “man’s best friend,” but lots of women – myself included – love having a four-legged exercise partner. At a minimum, my dog gets a long walk every day, often a play date with a bestie, and very frequently a backwoods hike – which to her means a lot of back and forth running. Sometimes we do other adventures, like cross country or AT skiing or stand-up paddleboarding.

But as record heat has gripped most of the nation and much of the planet this year, keeping your canine companion safe in the sweltering summer heat is more important than ever. So here are a few tips and essential gear ideas I’ve picked up along the way.
