Monterey County doesn’t fund that place at even remotely acceptable levels. This is followed by the budget recommendations just put out, where an addition $500k+ is cut from the Animal services budget. Front desk staff completely eliminated, animal care down to three positions, vet and vet tech only on 1/2 time. That shelter and the animals in the community cannot be adequately served this way; Santa Cruz in contrast funds the shelter much more appropriately and provides services needed to animals and the public, still maintaining a live release rate of about 85% while being completely open admission to ANY animal in need.
